Tourmaline

Tourmaline is the birthstone for the month of October and represents the 8th wedding anniversary.  It was once believed to protect the wearer against making bad decisions and misfortune.  It is also known to attract friends and lovers.  Pink tourmaline promotes female balance and protection.  Green tourmaline promotes the same among males.

Tourmaline is a mixed crystal of complex aluminum-borosilicate varying in composition.  The slightest changes in composition will result in completely different colors.  In fact, crystals showing only one color are quite rare; generally one and the same crystal displays several shades and colors.

Tourmaline is a precious stone displaying a unique splendor of colors.  According to an ancient Egyptian legend, a long way from the Earth's heart up towards the sun, tourmaline traveled along a rainbow.  On its way, it collected all the colors of the rainbow.  This is why today it is called the "Rainbow Gemstone."

Tourmaline has good wearability with a Mohs rating of 7 to 7.5.  It is safe to use in an ultrasonic as long as there are no notable clarity characteristics and safe to use a steamer on as well.
