Topaz

Blue Topaz is the birthstone for the month of December and Precious Topaz is an alternative birthstone for the month of November.  Topaz represents the 4th and 19th wedding anniversaries.  Legend has it that topaz dispels all enchantment and helps to improve eyesight.  The ancient Greeks believed that it had the power to increase strength and make its wearer invisible in times of emergency.

Precious Topaz sometimes has the amber gold color of fine cognac or the blush of a peach and all the beautiful warm browns and oranges in between.  Some rare and exceptional topaz are pale pink to a sherry red.

Blue topaz has a pale to medium blue color and is created by irradiation.  Recently mystic topaz emerged, which is a surface-enhanced topaz that has colors described as blue to greenish-blue or emerald-green.

Brown, yellow, orange, sherry, red, and pink colors are found in Brazil and Sri Lanka.  Pink topaz is found in Pakistan and Russia.  Pale topaz (which is enhanced to become blue) is found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and China.

Topaz is typically a very hard gemstone, but it can be split with a single blow, a trait it shares with a diamond.  As a result, it should be protected from hard knocks.  Topaz has a Mohs rating of 8.  It should never be cleaned with an ultrasonic or steamer.  Also, head should not be applied because it will cause a color change.
