Tanzanite Tanzanite is an alternative birthstone for the month of December and represents the 24th wedding anniversary. Tanzanite is known to uplift the spirit and open the heart. The bluish-purple hues of the stone are associated with generosity and friendship. Tanzanite is the blue variety of Zoisite gemstone (hydrated calcium aluminum silicate). The deep blue of Tanzanite ranges from ultramarine to a light purplish blue. The most coveted color is a blue which shows a purplish hue shimmering around it, which is spectacular in sizes above ten carats. More commonly found are the pale blue and pale purplish hues in smaller stones. Working with Tanzanite is a task which will cause even experienced cutters to tread carefully, as the cleavage of the gemstone is very high in one direction. The exclusive stone is cut in any imaginable shape and form, from classical round cuts to imaginative designer cuts. Tanzanite is a very special and unique gemstone. World-wide, it occurs only in one specific location. Found in Tanzania, the tanzanite stone has a hardness rate of 6-7 on the Mohs scale. Ultrasonic cleaners or steamers should not be used on the stone and heat should not be applied, it may cause cracking. |
