Sapphire Blue sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September and represents the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries. The calm blue sapphire evokes feelings of peace, faithfulness, and loyalty. It also represents truth, sincerity, and consistency. Sapphires belong to the corundum group along with rubies. Stones in the corundum group consist of pure aluminum oxide, crystallized into beautiful and splendid gemstones by the pressure and heat in the depths of the ground a long time ago. Small proportions of other elements, mainly iron and chrome, are responsible for the resulting colors and make the basically white crystals a blue, red, yellow, pink, or greenish sapphire. Sapphires most striking characteristic is its luster. It is considered to be one of the more valuable secondary gemstones. Contrary to popular belief, the light blue sapphires are more desirable for daily wear. The light color reflects brilliantly in the daylight and the blue continues to glisten into the evening. The oldest sapphire mines are located in Ceylon, present Sri Lanka. Ceylon Sapphires are immediately recognized by experts due to their luminous brilliance and light to medium blue color. Although other locations mine sapphires as well, Australia, Thailand, and Africa are large suppliers of sapphires. Sapphires rate a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale. It is safe to use an ultrasonic cleaner and a steamer on sapphires and the application of heat will not harm the stone. |
