Peridot

Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August and it represents the 16th wedding anniversary.  Peridot was thought to help dreams become reality and is often given as a symbol of fame, dignity, and protection.

Known as the volcanic gem, peridot is created in fire.  Found in volcanoes and even meteors that have fallen to the earth, peridot is a gem form of the mineral olivine that gets its color from iron.  Although peridot is one of the few gemstones which exist in only one color, the intensity of the color depends on the amount of iron in the stone.  This allows the peridot to come in a small variety of shades including yellow-green to olive to brownish-green.

Peridot is cut according to its crystal structure, usually in classical table and faceted cuts:  round, antique, octagonal, or oval shaped.  Gemstone cutters know that this stone is not easy to process.  The rough crystals can be devious and are easy to break.  The tensions existing inside the crystal are often quite considerable.  When the cutter has removed the most disturbing inclusions, peridot is a jewel which is excellently suited for daily wear without requiring special care.

The most beautiful peridot stones come from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region.  It is also found in China, Australia, Africa, Myanmar, and the US.  It rates a 6.5 to a 7 on the Mohs scale.  It is risky to use the ultrasonic cleaners on a peridot and never use the steamer either.  The application of heat may cause fracturing or breakage.
