Emerald

Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and represents the 20th, 35th, and 55th wedding anniversaries.  Emeralds are known to be a symbol of rebirth and romance.  The emerald is also known to strengthen the owner's memory, quicken intelligence, and assist in predicting the future.

Emerald is a mineral gemstone from the Beryl family.  Beryl gemstones are colorless yet when combined with chrome and vanadium, it crystallizes into an emerald.  Emeralds are one of the few gemstones where tiny inclusions and imperfections increase the value of the stone.  These flaws are what some collectors endearingly call Jardins.  The delicate plant-like cracks and fissures inside the gem resemble tiny gardens and mark the gem's individuality and charm.

Due to fissures and cracks, emeralds are liable to break under physical impact.  This causes difficulty to stone cutters when cutting the emeralds, even for the most experienced stone cutter.  Consequently, the emerald cut became the preferred cut for emeralds because it gives beveled edges and a sturdier shape.

Emeralds are found mostly in Columbia, Zambia, and Brazil.  The hardness of an emerald rates a 7 on the Mohs scale.  It is risky to use an ultrasonic cleaner and steamers should not be used to clean this stone.  Heat should never be applied to emeralds.
