Citrine Citrine is the birthstone for the month of November and represents the 13th wedding anniversary. The name is derived from the French word citron, meaning "lemon" and the color is associated with light-heartedness and cheerfulness. Citrine is often given as a symbol of hope, youth, health, and fidelity. Citrine is one of the most affordable gemstones, thanks to the durability and availability of this golden quartz. Citrine includes yellow to gold to orange brown shades of transparent quartz. Sunny and affordable, citrine can brighten almost any jewelry style, blending especially well with the yellow gleam of polished gold. The darker, orange/brown colors of citrine are called Madeira citrine after the color of wine. This generally has been the most valued color, however in modern times many prefer the bright lemony shades which mix better with pastel colors. Citrine is generally more inexpensive than amethyst and is also available in a wide range of calibrated sizes and shapes (including very large sizes). Sometimes you will hear citrine referred to as topaz quartz, which is incorrect. This name was used in the past in reference to the color, which is sometimes similar to the color of precious topaz. Since topaz is a separate mineral, this name is confusing and should not be used. However, citrine is considered an alternative to topaz as the birthstone for November. Citrine is most commonly mined in Brazil and Bolivia. It rates a 7 on the Mohs scale. It is usually safe to use in an ultrasonic cleaner, but risky with the steamer. When applying heat, a color change may occur. |
